Ex-Bills QB EJ Manuel Questions Why Nathan Peterman is Employed When He’s Not
Bills starting QB Nathan Peterman continued his woeful career Sunday, throwing three interceptions as the Bills were crushed by the Bears 41-9. The questions about Peterman’s continued employment swirled. One prominent writer called him the “Worst Starting QB in the History of the NFL. There was also the usual conversation about how Peterman’s latest disaster of a performance would aid Colin Kaepernick’s collusion suit against the NFL. It was another unemployed quarterback who strongly questioned Peterman’s looooong leash.

Manuel, who was drafted by the Bills in 2013 and last sniffed the NFL with the Raiders last season, deleted his Instagram post soon after posting but his point was made and hard to argue. This season, Peterman has one touchdown to seven interceptions. If you combine the past two seasons, the collective numbers are even more jarring: 3 touchdowns, 12 picks for a combined 32.5 passer rating.
Manuel wasn’t exactly a future Hall-of-Famer but he did at least throw more touchdowns than interceptions (20-16) and was a running threat. He was eventually supplanted in Buffalo by Tyrod Taylor, questions of race are certainly fair.
ESPN’s Mina Kimes posted a passage from a feature on Taylor she wrote last year in which a woman at a bar is interrupted by a male friend who calls Taylor and Manuel the “same quarterback” and that she prefers then rookie backup Peterman. The team was 3-2 at the time.
Luckily for Bills fan, Peterman is a short term answer until rookie first-round pick Josh Allen is healthy. But when you pit Peterman up against Manuel or a number of free agent quarterbacks, the eyebrow raising is legitimate.
