This Week in NFL Do-Goodery: Frank Gore, Cam Newton, Sterling Shepard
Another week, another series of players out in their community. The acts of kindness we list here are just a sliver of the good work these players are doing to better the lives of others. One quick note about this week’s version…we started this series five weeks ago and this is the first where a player who performed a good deed this week also has a past of domestic violence. I will be very careful in who is listed and why. We want to make sure this list is full of authentic altruism and not spotlighting acts that are simply one-off redemption acts. We also believe in change and evolution. With that being said, let’s get to this week’s list.
– Dolphins RB Frank Gore surprised the Coconut Grove Cowboys of Greater Miami Pop Warner at Armbrister Park with new football equipment for their program. Gore grew up in the area and was a member of the Cowboys as a kid.
“It’s real big, because that’s where I’m from,” Gore said. “We’re big on football and I’m one of the big names that come from out that neighborhood, so every time I come back, I let them know it’s possible and you can do the same thing.“
– Panthers DE Julius Peppers donated $100,000 towards Hurricane Florence relief and recovery efforts…and QB Cam Newton matched Peppers’s donation later this week.
– Speaking of the Panthers, new safety Eric Reid, along with free agent QB Colin Kaepernick (and girlfriend Nessa Diab) gave out numerous backpacks and hung out with members of the Boys and Girls Club of New York. It is the third straight year the trio has held a backpack giveaway with the group.
– Giants WR Sterling Shepard spent some time bagging groceries as part of ShopRite’s “Help Bag Hunger” campaign at the company’s Hoboken supermarket. September is National Hunger Action Month.
– Jets center Jonotthan Harrison surprised a high school junior in Woodbridge, NJ who had just transferred schools after being bullied. Harrison, carrying a square box, walked over to the kid in the cafeteria and said, “I heard you like pizza,” before joining him for lunch. Harrison’s surprise visit is the latest in part of the Jets’ Tackle Bullying program.
– Monday was a victory off day for the Chiefs but that didn’t stop WR Tyreek Hill from spending time bagging groceries at Hope WRX Food Pantry.
