What’d I Miss: The Jags Just Can’t Quit Blake Bortles

Catching you up on all the NFL news and nonsense you may have missed over the weekend…

Keep on Bortlin’

The Jaguars gave Blake Bortles an extension worth three-years, $54 million that brought out the BORT license plates, general internet mockery, and a mountain of shock. Kirk Cousins probably has one less prospect but the deal hardly locks Bortles in as the Jaguars unquestionable future. The Jags could still sign a free agent veteran or draft a quarterback.

Most importantly, the new Bortles contract cuts his 2018 cap hit from $19 million to $10 million, allowing the organization a shot at keeping its playoff caliber team in tact while adding more parts. Bortles, in a refreshing post contract interview with the team website, understands this full well.

“Rather than fight over money here or money there, let’s take what we can get because it’s more than I ever thought I’d make and it allows us to go get some other guys done and continue to be a good football team all around.”

Marcus Peters goes Hollywood

After logging 24 turnovers in three seasons, Marcus Peters is unequivocally one of the most talented cornerbacks in football. Now it is Rams fans that will see his talent up close and personal after the Chiefs agreed to trade Peters to Los Angeles for a couple of draft picks (not yet announced). Peters was a stalwart in the Kansas City community but also made negative waves on several occasional. His most recent infraction was being ejected in a game last season after throwing a flag at a referee.

In the aftermath of the trade some Twitter detectives uncovered old Tweets from Peters that are most definitely NSFW.

Jonathan Martin is not well

Former NFL lineman Jonathan Martin posted a highly disturbing, photo on IG Friday depicting a gun over a background strewn with shells, his high school, the Dolphins and several of his former teammates (including Richie Incognito) tagged, and this message: “When you’re a bully victim and coward, your options are suicide, or revenge.” Studio City’s Harvard-Westlake High School was shut down Friday in response. Martin is now in a mental facility after being released.

Odell Beckham Jr. probably hates the preseason

Last preseason, Odell Beckham Jr.  suffered a high left ankle sprain, before breaking the same ankle in Week 5. In a response to a fan tweet Saturday, Beckham doesn’t exactly appear to be gung ho about meaningless football.

Sometimes tweets can get lost in translation but this one could also be perceived as a contract negotiation play. He is scheduled to make $8.5 million on the last year of his rookie deal, a salary far below his market value.  A couple of hours later Beckham grew tired of the speculation.

Beckham may be right but the question remains: Does he plan to play in the preseason or not?

Chris Long is just the best

Three weeks after hoisting the Lombardi Trophy, Eagles DE Chris Long checked off another feat – climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for the third straight year. Long, along with former Green Beret and NFL punter Nate Boyer in conjunction wth their Waterboys foundation, scales the mountain annually to raise money for clean water wells in Africa. This year his “Conquering Kili” team was aiming to raise $150,000 to fund two new wells in Tanzania.

Larry Fitzgerald pays respects

The not retiring Fitzgerald paid ailing Arizona senator John McCain a visit over the weekend.

You thought the Olympics were over? Not so fast. The NFL’s Underwear Olympics, aka the Scouting Combine, begins Wednesday.
