Report: Roger Goodell may be willing to make the NFL fun again

Could Roger Goodell infuse the NFL with a wee dose of fun? According to a report from USA Today’s Tom Pelissero, the answer is that’s more probable than not.

Pelissero reports that the competition committee has been meeting this week in Indianapolis and reviewing excessive celebration calls. There could be a shift in focus from the act itself to its duration, with some obvious exceptions. Excessive celebration flags were in full force last season, totaling 30, almost double that of the previous year. Newsweek has a lengthy list of examples.

The brainstorming meetings will continue concurrent to the NFL combine. The earliest official shift could come at the NFL’s annual league meeting, which takes place in Arizona from March 26-29.

While the league considers the nuts and bolts of its celebration rules, let us hope the application is applied more consistently. In precipitous Week 13, 49ers special teamer Dontae Johnson was flagged for making a snow angel after blocking a punt and landing on it in the end zone.

Moments later in a different game, Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb scored, celebrated with a snow angel and crickets.
