Jeff Hart: Wednesday Linkfest for January 18, 2012

Well, I suppose I should finally link to the Washington Post’s exclusive interview with former Penn St coach Joe Paterno. My favorite part is how Paterno describes his actions following Mike McQueary telling him about the now infamous Sandusky shower rape. “So I sat around. It was a Saturday,” said Paterno. (I know, I know. Out of context. But is it, really?) For more perspective, we go to our friends at Second City:
In refreshing news of a head coach helping people, Jeff Fisher was the first on the scene of a single-car crash in Tennessee. Fisher stayed with the injured until authorities arrived, making sure to see the incident through out of a sense of civic responsibility, even though it wasn’t really his problem.
Based on some kind of stat-nerd projection model, the Patriots and the Giants are apparently the most likely Super Bowl match-up. The Patriots have a 35% chance of winning the whole thing. The 49ers, on the other hand, sit at only 15% likelihood of hoisting the Lombardi trophy.
The 49ers have other things to worry about besides meaningless projections. Like hooliganism! A letter to the editor that appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle details one Saints fan’s harrowing experience at Sunday’s 49ers game. On behalf of The Football Girl, I’d like to apologize for all the horrible things she shouted.
Do the characters in this Sunday’s championship games fit easily into classic high school archetypes? You bet they do!
Speaking of high school, the expression “gaybirds” to describe the Philadelphia Eagles is something I’d expect from an inarticulate sophomore with unrestricted access to a message board. From a New Jersey politician, though? Well… is there really that much difference?
Have you ever focused less on the football and more on the bombardment of ads in between? One writer from The Classical tried just that during the Patriots/Broncos game.
