Jeff Hart: Tuesday Linkfest for February 28, 2012

The rookie scouting combine may seem meaningless (especially if you’re Wes Welker) considering there are hours upon hours of college game footage to study, that tape likely a much better barometer of talent than any amount of sprints and high jumps. But, for Mississippi State RB Vick Ballard, the combine will likely define him for the foreseeable future:

I wouldn’t even know this kid’s name if he didn’t trip and I’ll probably forget it in about a week but, barring a stellar pro career, Ballard’s combine malfunction will haunt him for the rest of his life. I remember tripping in the dining hall when I was his age and I wanted to go into hiding.

Anyway, onto successful rookies. Here’s video of RG3’s 40 run, played over the runs of Andrew Luck and Cam Newton. It’s like a race!

So, wow, RG3 is fast. Sidenote: I understand Luck, but why is Newton included in this? Are we pretending that he’s being drafted again this year so the media can take back all those mean things it said last year?

Rumor has it that the Redskins are willing to trade three picks this year and their #1 next year to the Rams to trade up for RG3. That the Redskins are interested makes me irrationally feel like RG3 is doomed. Of course, there’s still an outside chance that Jim Irsay could feel daring and draft RG3 over Luck. (I only linked that last story because it describes Desean Jackson in passing as a “pre-Madonna.” He’s a Madonna in training!)

One last story about sprinting: here’s the special gear that Rich Eisen will be wearing as he attempts his yearly six-second 40 yard trundle.

Not sprinting this year, but running into trouble all the same is back-from-the-dead head coach Romeo Crennel, who may have gotten his tamper on yesterday. Off to a great start, Romeo. And for Chad Henne of all people?

Lastly, here’s something totally unrelated to the combine: a not-so mournful eulogy for the Gregg Williams coached Saints defense
