Jeff Hart: Tuesday Linkfest for February 14, 2012

By: Jeff Hart | Posted: February 14, 2012

Wow, I miss one day of Linkfest (now twice weekly, btw) and talk of the imminent demise of the NFL begins without me. Over the weekend, a pair of economists over at Grantland did some speculating on the lawsuit related shutdown of the NFL and what America would look like without its national pastime. Of course, they work in a troll-ish joke about crystal meth – it’s Grantland! The column has already generated some controversy and impassioned rebuttals, all of which is worth reading.

What Grantland’s brilliant economists didn’t see coming – these wannabe Steven Levitts always miss something, SUP GREAT RECESSION – was the return of football’s savior:

How could the sport possibly be in danger if it still features characters like Randy Moss? Oh, by the way, Moss can still run a 4.3 according to Cris Carter. And if we learned anything from his refusal to consider Calvin Johnson an elite WR, it’s that Carter is an excellent evaluator of talent.

Let’s jump back to economics for a second. If his Twitter feed is any indication, Roddy White was disturbed and alarmed when he learned just how many millions Roger Goodell stands to rake in from his new contract. White was unaware of the universal truth that old white guys that make lots of money for older whiter guys are handsomely paid. There’s actually a provision about that in the new CBA.

Feel like doing some prognosticating of your own? Check out these evaluations of the incoming quarterback draft class.

Oh, before I forget, it’s Valentine’s Day! Celebrate this most romantic of days with a heart-melting tale of a hopeful young soldier inviting a chaste if mediocre quarterback to her military ball. And if that fails to set your heart atwitter, perhaps a Valentine’s Day message from Eli Manning will do the trick. Love is in the air!
