Jeff Hart: Thursday Linkfest for March 15, 2012

Honestly, I’m surprised it’s taken the internet this long to provide a sketch where Tim Tebow and Jeremy Lin fight crime together. It’s an okay video, but wouldn’t you much rather see a version starring Peyton Manning and Carmelo Anthony?

Yesterday, the Lions signed Calvin Johnson to the biggest contract in NFL history. Usually, when a WR signs to big money, there’s talk about that position being overvalued and flashy pass catchers never earning those big bucks (hey, what’s up, Laurent Robinson?). There’s none of that talk where Megatron is concerned. In fact, there are pieces going up explaining why this is a great move on the part of Detroit.

Not to be a downer, because I totally agree that Johnson is worth his Megacoin, but the list of other $100M+ contracts in NFL history doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Sure, the elite Larry Fitzgerald is the only other receiver on the champagne-and-caviar list, and there are some other standouts like Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger. The rest of the list, though? The likes of Carson Palmer, Albert Haynesworth, and Daunte Culpepper. Is it the money that causes these players to flop, or is it just bad business by desperate front offices?

Speaking of WRs being signed to massive deals, how about some in-depth analysis of the 49ers $1.75 million Randy Moss contract? Currently, all signs point to this being one of the smartest and most low risk moves of free agency. Amazingly, we now live in a world where one Laurent Robinson is worth the same as like three of Randy Moss.

Enough about WRs. Who are the true unsung heroes of free agency? The back-up quarterbacks. Where Jason Campbell and Kyle Orton landed is way more important than you think.

Finally, saving the anonymous rumor-mongering and speculation for last, a comment from a Hollywood blog that traffics in blind items is getting some attention for reporting that the NFL is holding back the coming out of a high profile gay QB
