Jeff Hart: Monday Linkfest for October 3, 2011

By: Jeff Hart | Posted: October 03, 2011

Here’s my favorite video of Marion Barber’s back flip to emerge so far:

In what’s becoming an ongoing crusade of mine in these Linkfests, let’s highlight some of yesterday’s most dismal announcing. Of course, we begin with public enemy #1: Joe Buck. Sleepy Buck and his perpetually concussed partner Troy Aikman seemed bored to be calling yesterday’s game-deciding Cowboys drive. So bored that, much like Felix Jones, they forgot the down and distance. Oh, and the Lions opened at 4-0 following a historic rally. Ho-hum, right Joe? Maybe Jim Schwartz should’ve mimed a mooning.

There is hope on the horizon! Gus Johnson returned from his college football exile yesterday, calling his first game for new employer FOX Sports. Yes, it was the meeting of the winless Chiefs and Vikings, but Johnson still managed to inject some much needed excitement into the proceedings. Going forward, I’ll just be muting any game called by Joe Buck and using this handy tool to create my own commentary. Even out-of-context college basketball sound clips are better than the alternative.

We’re now accepting guesses on how much the league fines Jeremy Shockey after he took to multiple media platforms to rail against a questionable offensive pass interference call. Assuming he is fined, I wonder if “Pedro,” Shockey’s friend that supposedly hacked his Twitter to post the inflammatory comments, will foot any of the bill.

A youth football league in Arkansas had revived a rule that prevents players from scoring more than two TDs if their team is already up by more than 14 points. The NFL is considering applying this rule to Packers games.

Aaron Rodgers pretty much broke fantasy football yesterday with his beastly performance. If you’re feeling demoralized after a QB outscored your entire team, head on over to Razzball for some life-affirming fantasy insight.

Lastly, in sad news, Pete Gent, the author of North Dallas Forty, died over the weekend. Go read his book.
