Jeff Hart: Monday Linkfest for October 17, 2011

It seems the only thing people want to talk about after yesterday’s games is the confrontation between coaches Jim Schwartz and Jim Harbaugh. If you’ve somehow missed every NFL recap show since yesterday, here’s the video:

For all the in-depth discussion this incident has spurred – Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison even engaged in a reenactment – no one has acknowledged that Harbaugh doesn’t want any of Schwartz and his crazy eyes. Don’t come with your hardest handshake and expose your belly (a most insulting gesture in many cultures) if you’re not going to throw down, Harbaugh.

There’s also some background to this incident, as Schwartz strutted, reveled, and possibly yelled across the field after a Harbaugh unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the first quarter.

All of this near fight hysteria just distracts from two other incidents involving coaches, both of which contain more actual violence. First, there’s Sean Payton getting his leg flattened by Jimmy Graham and coaching the 2nd quarter with a broken tibia. I guess it’d take more than a firm handshake to ruffle Payton’s feathers.

And then, giving vent to the frustration of Eagles nation, there’s Lesean McCoy punching Andy Reid in the stomach. Is it possible the more abuse heaped on Reid, the better the Eagles will play? A theory worth testing out.

The only player involved controversy from yesterday was AJ Hawk giving the middle finger to the camera after a sack. He must have thought Joe Buck was calling the game. Hawk’s misbehavior was punctuated by the likely firing of an audio intern over at CBS.

Finally, going back to the Lions, here’s video of one of those creepy Youtube people reacting to the team’s first loss by pointing a gun at his head. Don’t worry, everyone, he’s just making a point!
