Jim Harbaugh's Greatest Quotes from the 2013-2014 Season

By: The Football Girl | Posted: January 10, 2014

Let’s face it, sitting atop the pantheon of quotage this season was Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith suggesting that rival cornerback Aqib Talib “Ice up, son” following the Panthers defeat of Talib’s New England Patriots in November.

Smith, for all his glorious lack of filter, is certainly not the only notorious talker in Sunday’s upcoming divisional game featuring the Carolina and San Francisco.  Jim Harbaugh is such a consistent presence in the GIF movement (ok, probably the biggest presence in NFL circles) that his words, his crazy, once-in-a-while profound but more often WTF? phraseology can take second-fiddle.

Not here. Not today. Because what follows are Harbaugh’s greatest hits from the past season. (In chronological order.)

8/30/2013: Inspired by linebacker Cam Johnson’s stellar preseason play, Harbaugh was asked about the prospect of keeping five linebackers on the roster.

"Five total? Yeah, you could. After tonight and the way Cam Johnson played, can you? Heck, yeah, you can. We're the San Francisco 49ers. We can do whatever we want."

[For the record, Johnson is now contending for a Super Bowl ring, albeit with a new team. The 49ers wanted to trade Johnson to the Colts as the regular season approached, and that’s what they did because, well, they’re the 49ers.]

9/28/2013: On Colin Kaepernick “favoriting” hate-filled tweeted as motivation:

“As long as all that's written is written against us, then we feel a certain assurance of success. If people are heaping flowery words of praise upon you, That means you're exposed before your enemies.  I'm quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson there."

11/10/2013: Harbaugh questioned Clay Matthews’ toughness after Matthews slapped 49ers left tackle Joe Staley in the aftermath of a sideline kerfuffle following a late hit on Colin Kaepernick:

"I think that young man works very hard on being a tough guy. He'll have some repairing to do to his image after the slap."

12/8/2013: Locker room speech following a 19-17 win over Seattle:

“This reminds me of the Nelson Mandela quote. Difficulty breaks some men but makes others. Now give yourselves a high five.”

12/20/2013: Harbaugh when asked by a reporter about rumors that he could replace Mack Brown at Texas:

“Rumors? Do you have any evidence? Any evidence, or what are we talkin'? Hearsay, here? Hearsay. Well in Judge Judy's court, hearsay is not admissible evidence. So I think we can all agree that an unnamed source is hearsay, would we not? ... You have my quote on that question.”

12/24/2013: The day after inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman’s pick-six sealed a 49ers victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football:

"I was and still am happier than a pig in slop."

12/31/2013: On 49ers assistant Tim Drevno accepting the offensive line job at USC:

“I am confident the entire Drevno family will attack this endeavor with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.”

[Pet hamster included.]

1/5/2014: After San Francisco’s divisional win at Green Bay, Harbaugh doted on his star wide receiver:

"People talked about cold weather and it would be a tough to catch ball, but the greatest catcher of all time, Michael Crabtree, catches everything. It's unbelievable. In the northern snowlands down to the tropics and sunny scenes, he's catching the football. Wherever they throw a football, he'll be catching it."
