Tom Coughlin on His 'Magnificent Blur'

By: The Football Girl | Posted: February 24, 2012

When Tom Coughlin took the podium at the Scouting Combine this afternoon he was more relaxed than most other coaches and general managers who had come before him.  “It feels like we were just here,” he said. “Wait, we were just here.”

Coughlin ran through an array of topics, the most worrisome of which is the doubtful futures of tight ends Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum, both of whom tore their ACLs during Super Bowl XLVI.  The speculation is both will start the 2012 season of the Physically Unable to Perform list.  If that is the case, Coughlin is prepared to seek out a vertical, athletic tight end type that is becoming the norm in today’s NFL.

He also confirmed recent surgeries for defensive end Justin Tuck (shoulder), defensive tackle Chris Canty (knee), and defensive tackle Linval Joseph (ankle).  On a more uplifting note, Coughlin confirmed that running back Ahmad Bradshaw, who suffering from a nagging ankle issue, has not needed surgery at this point.

But for the most part Coughlin, who was on the hot seat at this time last year, beamed as he reflected on the his Super Bowl experience and the “graciousness” of Indianapolis.  “It’s a blur, but a magnificent blur,” Coughlin said.

In closing, when asked about the potential of defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, Coughlin looked up to the ceiling.  It is a very high ceiling.
