NFL Training Camp Roundup for August 7th

Chicago Bears

LB Brian Urlacher has missed five straight days of practice (four for a sore left knee, one for personal reasons), but Lovie Smith doesn’t seem concerned. Urlacher, who sprained with MCL and partially sprained his posterior cruciate ligament Januay 1st, will miss the Bears preseason opener Thursday against the Broncos.  The linebacker turned 34 in May and thus an ability to fully heal is of concern.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos signed veteran LB Keith Brooking to add reinforcement after starter Quinton Carter required arthroscopic surgery. Brooking, 36, has played with the Falcons and Cowboys, and is best known for his unique brand of chanting.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Rookie WR Justin Blackmon signed his contract and ended his holdout. The deal is worth $18.5 million over four years. Blackmon was the last remaining rookie holdout.

New England Patriots

With the departure of BenJarvus Green-Ellis, the Patriots running back  game is back to operating like a free-for-all.  In the mix are Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Danny Woodhead, and undrafted rookie Brandon Bolden. Look for roles to be further defined and evolve over the season. Or not.

New York Giants

CB Terrell Thomas got good news on his hurt knee. Dr. James Andrews concurred with other doctors that it is not a torn ACL and thus does not require surgery. Thomas could play this season.

San Francisco 49ers

Former head coach Mike Singletary makes his return to Candlestick on Friday. The Vikings, where he is a second-year linebackers coach, take on the 49ers in each team’s first exhibition game.  Grantland’s Bill Barnwell called the Singletary-to-Harbaugh swap “the biggest head coaching improvement an NFL team has ever made.”

Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks signed WR Terrell Owens to a one-year contract yesterday.  The 38-year old last played in the NFL in 2010.
