Could Kirk Cousins be traded to the 49ers?

Apparently Kirk Cousins really likes red and gold. As one of the NFL’s most intriguing offseason storylines takes a twist, the Washington QB who today was designated with the franchise tag, has listed the San Francisco 49ers as the one team he would be willing to land, according to an ESPN report.

A trade to San Francisco would mean a Cousins-Kyle Shanahan reunion following Shanahan’s offensive coordinator days in Washington.

The 49ers hold the no. 2 pick in the upcoming NFL draft, while Washington has no. 17. Perhaps a swap of first round picks, plus the 49ers second round pick gets the deal done. Shanahan and new GM John Lynch may also opt to wait a year when the Redskins cannot tag Cousins again and he becomes an unrestricted free agent. But by then Washington could award Cousins with the mega deal he is seeking.

Given the 49ers’ recent history of one year and done head coaches, if Shanahan believes Cousins is his guy, he should probably mortgage the franchise to get him pronto.
