Chargers -3 The Falcons have to travel cross-country here on a short week after playing on Monday night.  The Dirty Birds are 2-0 and look like world beaters right now, but they have consistently looked like world beaters at home for the past few seasons.  Look for this to be a letdown spot for them.  Another team that is consistently good at home is the Chargers.   Last week the Chargers gained 148 yards on the ground, and that has been Atlanta’s weakness on defense, giving up 270 rushing yards and 4 rushing scores in their first 2 games.   On the…

Vikings -1.5 Andrew didn’t have much Luck in his NFL debut.  I have no doubt that this future star will have a breakout game early this season.  But, I don’t believe it will come against Jared Allen and the Vikings D.  Turnovers are key in the NFL and Luck had 3 interceptions in Week 1, while second year QB, Ponder had none.  Adrian Peterson looked great coming off knee surgery, and utility man, Percy Harvin looked as good as ever in Week 1 as well.  With Dwight Freeney most likely on the sideline, I think the Colts will have a…

Eagles (-8.5) Last year they were the “Dream Team.”  Yeah.  The “Dream Team” that finished 8-8, and needed to win their last four just to post that record.  They were overhyped and they underachieved.  I think this is the year that the Eagles put it all together.  That should be easy in Week 1 when they face the Cleveland Browns.  The Browns are young (15 rookies and 11 second year players on their roster) and inexperience is a big obstacle, especially in the early weeks of the season.  The Browns are coming off a season where they had one of…

One night at the NFL combine this past February I happened upon a restaurant with a large table of orthopedic surgeons in town repping their teams and assigning medical grades to incoming prospects. Among the group, one diner stood out in particular. She was blond, pretty, perky and well, a she. She was Pittsburgh Steelers orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Robin West. The mother of two girls, Dr. West has been a fixture in the Pittsburgh sports community for almost a decade.  In addition to her role with the Steelers, she is the head physician for the Pitt Panthers men’s basketball team,…

Describing Anita Marks’ career in a few paragraphs is a challenge, to put it mildly. Marks is currently a sports talk radio host for 660 WFAN in New York, hosts fantasy football shows for Bloomberg Sports, and does a variety of multimedia spots for the New York Giants’ official website, giants.com. Before that she was in Baltimore for four years where she balanced hosting an afternoon radio talk show with television duties for the then-launching MASN (Mid-Atlantic Sports Network).  This was all after launched a long, successful career in the Miami market.  She has also played professional football, as a…

Reeta Hubbard is a football goddess. So says her bio on Twitter, where she has gained a huge following due to her sassy, pointed NFL commentary. Reeta is better known as The NFL Chick (an edgier version of The Football Girl, if you ask me) and has a comprehensive blog aptly titled, TheNFLChick.com, started in 2005 and re-launched in 2008. Reeta’s football knowledge is wide-ranging, but she has a special love for and interest in the Baltimore Ravens. Full of purple pride In honor of the Ravens taking on the Patriots in Sunday’s AFC Championship, there is no better time than…

The San Francisco 49ers made a major hire this year, a person with a Stanford pedigree and widespread connections throughout the league. Her name is Hannah Gordon and she’s the 49ers Director of Legal Affairs.  She’s also our new Featured Football Girl. Melissa Jacobs:  Before we get to how you got your job, can you describe some of the duties of an NFL team’s legal department? Hannah Gordon:  The main thing for us is supporting our revenue groups.  That would be our sponsorship, marketing and ticketing folks and helping them negotiate their sponsorship or vendor deals. They are doing the…

As the Vice President of Marketing for the Baltimore Ravens, Gabrielle Dow wears many hats.  Player corporate appearances, in game entertainment, and Purple, the NFL’s largest club for women, are just a few areas that fall under Dow’s leadership.  I recently had a chance to chat in-depth with Dow about several aspects of her dynamic role. Dow, at a Ravens game, with Senior VP of Public and Community Relations, Kevin Byrne Melissa Jacobs:  Please describe the elements that fall within your job function. Gabrielle Dow:  As the vice president of marketing, I oversee all the fan affinity groups, game entertainment,…
